Fishing Heritage Day 2012 was held on Saturday, May 19 from 9 am to 4 pm at the State Fish Hatchery and the Town Park in South Otselic, NY. DEC personnel, with the assistance of Trout Unlimited volunteers, conducted two trout fishing clinics, while tours were again offered of the hatchery facilities. Exhibitors such as the Friends of Rogers Environmental Education Center, and the Finger Lakes Trail Conference, provided informational displays in the hatchery building. Also featured was a new aquarium that held sturgeon, trout, catfish and some of the young tiger muskie being raised at the hatchery. Several non-profit organizations were also located in the Town Park, while a variety of vendors were on hand selling their crafts and artwork. Local musicians “Out of the Woodwork” and guitarist Tom Rasely performed under the pavilion, providing a soothing and entertaining background during the day. Across the street, Gladding Braided Products, LLC demonstrated one of their vintage braiding machines and offered various rope products for sale. Food and drinks were again provided by local nonprofit organizations, and the Otselic Valley Grange sponsored another successful community-wide garage sale and their beef barbecue luncheon at the nearby Grange Hall. Binghamton's Ross Park Zoomobile made its second appearance, and Peter Thompson, author of Freshwater Game Fish of North America: An Illustrated Guide, and fly tyer Albert Daher, Jr. graced the event for the third year in a row. The U.S. Postal Service introduced the new 2012 special stamp cancellation, featuring a drawing by local artist Michael Sheridan.
With the good weather throughout the day, Fishing Heritage Day provided hundreds of people and their families an opportunity to enjoy the heritage of this historic community in an outdoor setting, with its tie to the sport fishing industry.
