About Otselic Valley
Celebrating our Rural Nature, Culture & History
The Otselic Valley is home to scenic trails, ponds and Otselic River fishing spots which locals treasure for their beauty and history. Browse our site to discover all the hidden gems that make our valley unique and valued.
South Otselic is one of several valley hamlets connected by the Otselic River as it threads its way 55 miles from Madison County, southwesterly through Chenango, Cortland and Broome Counties, before joining the Tioughnioga River below the Whitney Point Reservoir.
The ponds at the hatchery rears walleye fingerlings, while tanks inside the hatchery rears small lots of wild, heritage-strain and Temiscamie brook trout. Annual production is 15,000 pounds of fish. Brook trout are stocked with fix wing airplane (bush pilots), as well as helicopters, in select Adirondack lakes. Over 10 square miles (26 km2) or about 7,000 acres (2,800 ha) are state-owned forest lands open for public recreation such as hunting, bird-watching, camping, fishing, hiking and cross country skiing.
Become a Volunteer
The OVF&HA is one of the few, if not the only non-profit organization in the 4-county area (Chenango, Madison, Cortland and Broome), that takes the long view of promoting a better understanding, appreciation and promotion of the Otselic Valley's existing natural, historic, cultural and social assets, needs and potential. South Otselic's historic recreational fishing, fishing line industry and home of one of NYS's 12 fish hatcheries, represent but one theme that ties this unique region together (and was the genesis for the annual F&HD).
To be a volunteer would mean lending your talents, skills, knowledge and abilities to help further this mission. This could include providing input while attending monthly meetings, helping with the planning and physical coordination of the annual F&HD and other special programs, and representing the Association at neighboring events, all with the overarching goal of enhancing the Valley's quality of life for present and future generations.
All volunteers are invited to attend the monthly meetings. Send us a message, we'd love to hear from you!
